Buddy's Obituary - Published in Charlotte Observer 7/17/08

Charles Lockwood Obituary

Charles A. Lockwood III (Buddy), Ph.D., formerly of Charlotte, was killed in a motorcycle accident in London, England, on Monday, July 14, 2008. A memorial service will be held at 11:00, Friday, 7/18 at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC. There will be visitation immediately following the service.

Buddy was currently a Lecturer in Human Evolution in the Department of Anthropology at University College London. In August, he was moving to Johannesburg, South Africa, to become the first director of the Institute of Human Evolution at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Buddy graduated from the NC School of Science and Math in 1988, and graduated with honors from Duke University, where he was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship. He did post-graduate work at SUNY at Stony Brook and later received his Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

Buddy is survived by his parents, Charles and Eleanor Lockwood; sisters, Leslie House (Ben) and Amy Shoemaker (Jim); his nieces and nephews, Clara, Catherine, Charlie, Claudia and Ben. Also many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and colleagues around the world.

In his short life, he accomplished many things. He traveled extensively, loved hiking, mountain climbing and being outdoors. Buddy was a gifted writer and has written numerous scientific research articles and one newly published text on human evolution. He was a man of strong faith, integrity, and was well-respected by his colleagues. He loved his family and was always full of surprises. He was and always will be “cool” Uncle Buddy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Duke Lemur Center, 3705 Erwin Road, Durham, NC 27705, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Thank You

Words cannot even express how thankful we are for all the thoughts and prayers that have been sent our way.  For as much as we loved our son and brother, it is very reassuring to know how much he was loved and cared about by so many others while being so far away from home.
We thought a blog would be the best way to reach out to everyone around the world.

We'll try to update when we know other information, and maybe share some stories.  Please feel free to share any stories or thoughts if you want, and pass this along.
